In this week’s episode, I delve deeper into the experience of studying and living in Taiwan, specifically asking the question: Is Taiwan a good place to study Mandarin?
Drawing on experience from a year of study and travel in 2023, including a semester course at National Taiwan University, and recent months spent living in Taiwan, I’ll consider three key criteria:
1. Is Taiwan a good place to live in general?
This considers factors that contribute to your overall quality of life during an extended stay for language study.
This is arguably the most important criterion. After all, you’re unlikely to learn much Mandarin if you’re not happy where you’re living!
2. What is the quality of Mandarin teaching like in Taiwan?
Here, I look at the availability of good institutions and the standard of language instruction.
3. Are there immersive opportunities?
Finally, how easy is it for foreigners living in Taiwan to completely immerse in Mandarin?
